Goodboy Galaxy is an exploration-focused indie "Metroidvania-lite" adventure platformer developed by Rik Nicol and Jeremy Clarke. Funded through a highly successful Kickstarter campaign and released in late 2023, it holds the distinction of being the first major commercial Game Boy Advance (GBA) game released in over 13 years.

The Story

Players control Maxwell, a spacefaring dog whose home world is facing an imminent ecological collapse. In a desperate attempt to find a solution to save his people, Maxwell performs a blind hyperjump across space. The jump leaves his spaceship stranded at the edge of a hostile, unfamiliar galaxy. To survive, fix his ship, and find a way back home, Maxwell must explore mysterious planets, gather weapons, and enlist the help of new allies.

Gameplay & Mechanics

The developers describe the game as a mix between Metroid and Cave Story, featuring expressive pixel art and a high level of charm:

• Exploration Platforming: Levels are colorful, tightly packed, and layered with multiple vertical and horizontal routes, secret areas, and environmental puzzles.
• Abilities & Upgrades: Players can upgrade Maxwell’s blaster weapon and utilize equipment like jetpacks to unlock special abilities, allowing them to jump, shoot, warp, shrink, and drill through obstacles.
• Friendship Card System: A major element of the game involves talking to NPC inhabitants. Players can meet over 50 unique characters and complete mini-quests to collect their official "friendship cards".
