The game features massive, multi-layered Zones packed with hidden rooms, bonus stages, and alternating pathways that reward exploration. By gathering the Chaos Emeralds in the pseudo-3D "Blue Spheres" special stages, players can transform into Super Sonic to unleash ultimate speed and invincibility.

• Introduction of Knuckles: The game marks the historic debut of Knuckles the Echidna, the stubborn guardian of Angel Island who is tricked by Dr. Robotnik into hindering Sonic and Tails.
