Golden Axe III is a side-scrolling beat 'em up, hack-and-slash video game developed and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) on June 25, 1993. The title was originally exclusive to Japan but eventually reached North American audiences via the Sega Channel online service in 1995. It is the third main installment of the home console trilogy.

The Story

The plot takes place in the dark fantasy world of Yuria. The evil prince of darkness, Damud Hellstrike, has stolen the legendary Golden Axe and placed a mind-controlling curse over all the world's great warriors. One of four distinct heroes is freed from the curse and must trek across the land to break Hellstrike's magic, free their fellow brainwashed companions, and recover the artifact.

Playable Characters

The original roster of heroes has changed, with original protagonist Gilius Thunderhead only appearing in unplayable cutscenes. Instead, the player can choose from four unique combatants:

• Kain Grinder: A balanced human barbarian wielding a broadsword and utilizing ice magic, functionally replacing Ax Battler.
• Sarah Burn: A fast human gladiatrix wielding a sword and utilizing destructive fire magic, replacing Tyris Flare.
• Chronos "Evil" Lait: A humanoid black panther/jaguar who uses fast claw attacks, high agility, a double jump, and wind magic.
• Proud Cragger: A slow, hulking giant with massive attack power who wields earth magic.

Gameplay Features

• Branching Paths: Unlike its entirely linear predecessors, this version lets players choose different routes at "forks" in the road, altering the stages they play and offering unique endings.
• Expanded Movesets: The combat system adds special directional-input attacks, blocking/parrying mechanics, projectiles, and devastating cooperative team attacks in 2-player co-op mode.
• Rideable Bizarrians: Players can mount fantasy creatures like leg-whipping snails and flame-spitting lizards to combat enemies.
• Magic and Health System: Blue thieves return to drop magic phials that fuel screen-clearing elemental spells. The game also introduces a proper visual health bar alongside hidden heart items to expand maximum life.
• Versus Mode: A dedicated 1-on-1 battle arena allows players to fight against a friend or a gauntlet of AI opponents.
