Harvest Moon DS Island of Happiness is a farming simulation game for the Nintendo DS where players must build a thriving community after being shipwrecked on a deserted island. Released in 2008, it is the fourth Harvest Moon title for the DS and is notable for its almost exclusive use of touchscreen controls for movement and farming tasks.
Story and Setting
- The Shipwreck: The game begins with the protagonist (Mark or Chelsea) boarding a ship to start a new life. A storm destroys the vessel, leaving you and a few other survivors—Taro and his family—stranded on an uninhabited island.
- Building a Paradise: You discover an abandoned farm and decide to restore it. Your primary goal is to attract new settlers by expanding your farm and improving the island's infrastructure, such as building roads and bridges.
- Population Growth: As your farm prospers, more villagers arrive to set up shops and businesses. There are over 90 potential residents to "collect" or unlock through various tasks.
Key Gameplay Features
- Touch Controls: Almost every action, from walking and running to watering crops and milking cattle, is performed using the DS stylus.
- Advanced Farming: Crop growth is influenced by a complex weather system. Tools are upgraded by attaching "Wonderful Stones," which are earned by winning island festivals.
- Social Life & Marriage: Players can befriend villagers and pursue one of six marriage candidates (depending on the chosen gender). The game includes a Rival System where other bachelors and bachelorettes can marry each other and have children if the player does not marry them.
- Wi-Fi Connectivity: The game originally featured voice chat and global farm rankings via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.
Reception and Challenges
While praised for its depth and variety, the game is often considered one of the more challenging entries in the series due to:
- Steep Difficulty: Building materials and house expansions are expensive, and stamina management is critical early on.
- Polarizing Controls: Many players and reviewers found the mandatory touchscreen movement to be less precise and more fatiguing than traditional D-pad controls.
- Slow Start: It can take several in-game years to fully develop the farm and unlock all island features.
