Released in 2009 for the Nintendo DS, The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks is an action-adventure game that serves as a direct sequel to Phantom Hourglass. Set 100 years after the events of its predecessor, the story follows a new Link in the land of "New Hyrule," where the titular Spirit Tracks are magical rails that both connect the kingdom and act as chains binding the Demon King, Malladus.

Key Gameplay Mechanics

·       Train Travel: Unlike the open-sea sailing of previous titles, overworld exploration is done via the Spirit Train. You draw routes on the map using the stylus, control the train's speed, and use a cannon to defend against enemies.

·        Zelda as a Companion: In a series first, Princess Zelda accompanies Link as a spirit for most of the game. She can possess massive suits of armor called Phantoms, allowing players to control her to solve puzzles, cross hazards like lava, or battle enemies.

·        Touch & Sound Controls: The game is controlled almost entirely with the DS stylus. It also features the Spirit Flute, a musical instrument played by blowing into the DS microphone and sliding the stylus to change notes.

·        The Tower of Spirits: This central, multi-floor dungeon is visited throughout the game to restore the fading tracks. Unlike the "Temple of the Ocean King" in Phantom Hourglass, it does not have a time limit or require replaying floors you've already completed.

Storyline

Link begins the game as an apprentice train engineer about to receive his official certificate from Princess Zelda. During a secret meeting, Zelda reveals that the Spirit Tracks are disappearing. While investigating, they are ambushed by the treacherous Chancellor Cole, who separates Zelda's spirit from her body to use it as a vessel for the Demon King. Link and Zelda's spirit must then travel across New Hyrule’s four realms—Forest, Snow, Ocean, and Fire—to restore the tracks and reclaim her body.

Multiplayer Mode: The game includes a non-canonical "Battle Mode" where up to four players can compete to collect Force Gems while avoiding Phantoms.
