The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King for the Game Boy Advance (GBA) is a custom-designed isometric action-RPG developed by Griptonite Games and published by Electronic Arts in 2003. Unlike its console counterparts, this version features "Diablo-style" gameplay focused on leveling, loot, and skill upgrades.

Key Gameplay Features

  • Playable Characters: The game features 8 playable characters, including 6 available from the start (Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Frodo, Sam, and Gandalf the White) and 2 secret unlockable heroes.
  • RPG Mechanics: Players earn experience points (EXP) to unlock character-specific skill trees. A unique "rune" system allows you to etch special abilities into your weapons.
  • Multiple Paths: You can follow three distinct storylines mirroring the film's narrative: defending Minas Tirith as Gandalf, raising the Army of the Dead with the "Three Hunters," or journeying to Mount Doom with Frodo and Sam.
  • Interactive Environments: The game includes over 12 environments recreated from the movie where you can use objects like catapults and spears as weapons.
  • Multiplayer: A two-player cooperative mode is supported via the GBA Link Cable.

Technical Details & Content

  • Visuals & Sound: It utilizes digital assets from the films, including voice snippets recorded by the actual actors and a soundtrack taken directly from the movie.
  • Connectivity: Linking to the Nintendo GameCube version unlocks exclusive content, such as new items, secret characters, and bonus maps like the Mines of Moria.
  • Difficulty & Replayability: Critics from Gamespot noted it as a solid "hack-and-slash" with dozens of hours of potential gameplay to find all artifacts and reach 100% completion.
