Mario and Luigi Partners in Time is a turn-based action RPG for the Nintendo DS, developed by AlphaDream and published by Nintendo in 2005. As the second installment in the Mario & Luigi series, it serves as a sequel to Superstar Saga and is uniquely characterized by its time-traveling plot and the introduction of "baby" versions of the main cast. 

Story and Setting

The game takes place in both the present and past of the Mushroom Kingdom. After Princess Peach is kidnapped by a hostile alien species known as the Shroobs while traveling to the past, Mario and Luigi must use "time holes" to rescue her. Along the way, they team up with their infant selves—Baby Mario and Baby Luigi—to collect shards of the Cobalt Star and stop the Shroob invasion. 

Gameplay Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around the cooperation between the quartet of brothers, utilizing the dual screens and expanded button layout of the Nintendo DS. 

• Four-Character Control: Players control both adult and baby pairs simultaneously. The adults are typically mapped to the A and B buttons, while the babies use the X and Y buttons.
• Dual-Screen Puzzles: The game frequently requires splitting the group. For example, the babies can be thrown into small passages to flip switches or reach items that the adults cannot access. The top screen often displays the babies' perspective while the adults remain on the bottom.
• Turn-Based Battles: Combat is turn-based but requires precise timing for "Action Commands" to deal extra damage or dodge enemy attacks.
• Bros. Items: Unlike other entries in the series, this game replaces traditional "Bros. Attacks" with consumable Bros. Items (like the Green Shell or Cannonballer) that allow all four brothers to team up for powerful combo moves.
• Exclusive Features: It is the only game in the series to lack a BP (Bros. Points) stat and was compatible with the DS Rumble Pak accessory.
