Released in late 2007, Mario Party DS is a handheld party game developed by Hudson Soft for the Nintendo DS. It is notable for being the only entry in the series for that system and the final one developed by Hudson Soft before the franchise transitioned to NDcube. 

Premise and Setting

The game centers on a unique "shrunken" theme. After being lured to Bowser's Castle with a fake invitation to a feast, Mario and his friends are shrunk to the size of chess pieces by Bowser's "Minimizer". Players must navigate five oversized boards, such as a garden and a music room, to recover five Sky Crystals and return to their normal size. 

Gameplay Features

• Traditional Board Play: Up to four players roll dice to move across boards, collecting coins and Stars to become the "Superstar".
• Minigames: Includes over 70 new minigames designed for the DS hardware, utilizing the touch screen and microphone.
• Playable Characters: Players can choose from eight iconic characters: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Yoshi, Toad, Wario, and Waluigi.
• Multiplayer: Supports local wireless play for up to four people using DS Download Play, meaning only one person needs a game card for everyone to play together. 

Key Game Modes

• Story Mode: A single-player campaign where players must win on each of the five boards and defeat a unique boss—such as a Piranha Plant or Hammer Bro—in a specialized minigame.
• Party Mode: The standard mode for 1–4 players to compete in Battle Royale, Tag Battle, or Duel Battle.
• Minigame Mode: Includes specific challenges like Step It Up (a race to win a set number of games) and Score Scuffle (a point-based competition across 10 games).
• Puzzle Mode: Features puzzle games from past entries along with the new, touch-based Triangle Twisters.
