Metal Gear Solid for the Game Boy Color (known as Metal Gear: Ghost Babel in Japan) is a stealth action-adventure game released in 2000. While it shares its name with the PlayStation classic, it is a standalone original entry rather than a port. It serves as a non-canon alternate sequel set seven years after the events of the original 1987 Metal Gear on the MSX2. 

Story and Setting

Solid Snake is brought out of retirement to infiltrate Galuade, a fortress built on the ruins of the original Outer Heaven. A militant group called the Gindra Liberation Force has hijacked a new Metal Gear prototype codenamed Gander. Snake is joined by Sgt. Christine Jenner and must face the Black Chamber, a specialized mercenary unit with animal-themed codenames similar to FOXHOUND. 

Gameplay Features

The game blends the classic 2D top-down perspective of the MSX titles with modernized stealth mechanics from the PlayStation version. 

• Stealth Mechanics: Snake can flatten against walls, knock on surfaces to distract guards, and hide in tall grass.
• Expanded Movement: Unlike earlier 8-bit titles, Snake can move and aim in eight directions and the screen scrolls smoothly instead of flipping.
• Stages & Missions: The story is divided into 13 linear stages. After completion, players can unlock "Special" stages with new objectives and a massive 180 VR Mission mode.
• Multiplayer: This was the first Metal Gear title to feature a competitive 2-player mode via Game Link Cable, where players compete to retrieve data disks from drones.
