Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon is a 2006 simulation role-playing game for the Nintendo DS that serves as a fantasy-themed spin-off of the classic Harvest Moon / Story of Seasons franchise. Pitched by its producers as "Harvest Moon where you wield a sword," it successfully blends traditional farming, foraging, and dating mechanics with active real-time dungeon crawling and monster taming.

Story & Setting

The narrative takes place in the peaceful border town of Kardia.

  • The Premise: You play as a young traveler named Raguna (or Laguna) who stumbles into the village collapsing from exhaustion and suffering from complete amnesia.
  • The Farm: A kind young resident named Mist rescues you and offers you a plot of land. As you work to build a new life as a farmer, your efforts slowly help you uncover the mysteries of your forgotten past and protect the town from impending outside threats.

Core Gameplay Mechanics

The gameplay introduces an active dual-resource loop that separates it from standard farm simulators.

  • Dual Resource Gauges: Alongside the franchise's traditional Stamina/Rune Point (RP) bar, this game introduces a dedicated Health Point (HP) bar. Actions like tilling soil consume RP; if your RP hits zero, subsequent labor or damage drains your HP, causing you to pass out.
  • Action-RPG Combat: The world features dangerous caves and dungeons tied to different seasons. You can explore these areas to battle monsters in real-time using swords, spears, hammers, and magic spells.
  • Monster Taming: Instead of buying traditional cows or chickens, you use a brush to capture and tame the monsters inhabiting the dungeons. Once brought back to your custom barns, monsters act as farmhands, yield sellable products (like honey or wool), or accompany you into combat as party members.
  • Social Life & Romance: You can integrate into Kardia's community, fulfill requests, chat with the locals, and woo several eligible bachelorettes by learning their favorite items and giving them gifts.

Technical Details & Legacy

  • Developer/Publisher: Developed by Neverland Co. and published in North America by Natsume Inc..
  • Hardware Features: The game utilizes standard DS button navigation paired with optional Touch Screen controls for managing inventory and navigating menus. It also initially featured wireless trade capabilities via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.
  • Impact: The game celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Harvest Moon series. Due to its high critical success, it eventually dropped the Harvest Moon branding entirely to become its own highly successful standalone franchise.
