Spirits and Spells (known as Castleween in Europe) is a Halloween-themed action-platformer developed by Magic Pockets for the Game Boy Advance.
Story and Characters
The game follows two children, Alicia and Greg, who venture into a spooky forest on Halloween in search of a house filled with candy. They fall into a trap set by the Bogeyman, who steals their friends' souls and turns them into stone. To save them, Alicia and Greg must journey through the Land of the Dead to confront the Bogeyman and a mad scientist.
Gameplay Mechanics
The core gameplay involves navigating 2D levels, solving simple puzzles, and defeating enemies.
- Character Swapping: Players can switch between Alicia and Greg at certain points (or instantly using collectible crystals) to utilize their unique abilities.
- Alicia's Abilities: Dressed as a witch, she is invulnerable to ice, can shrink herself, and floats when jumping, allowing her to fall safely from any height.
- Greg's Abilities: Dressed as a devil (or imp), he has a double jump, a longer-range pitchfork attack, and uses fire-based special moves.
- Health System: The game uses "sparks" as health, similar to Sonic the Hedgehog's rings; taking damage without sparks results in losing a life.
Environments
Players explore several classic horror-themed locations:
- Haunted houses and cemeteries.
- Eerie forests and dark crypts.
- An abandoned laboratory/steel foundry.
