4 Underrated Games That Were Forgotten Over Time

Many video games are forgotten by time. The video game market is incredibly competitive, and new games are constantly being released. As a result, older games often get pushed to the wayside.

While many video games fall into obscurity after just a few years, some manage to stand the test of time and remain popular decades after their initial release. However, there are also a number of great games that, for one reason or another, have been largely forgotten.

Whether due to poor marketing or being overshadowed by other releases, modern gamers often overlook these hidden gems. However, for those willing to dig a little deeper, there are a number of forgotten video games that are well worth checking out.

From cult classics to hidden gems, these lost treasures offer something unique and exciting for gamers of all stripes. So don't be afraid to explore some of the lesser-known corners of the gaming world - you might just find your new favorite game.

Lollipop Chainsaw

If you were a gamer in 2012, there's a good chance you remember Lollipop Chainsaw. The title was developed by Grasshopper Manufacture and published by Warner Bros. Games. It starred Juliet Starling, a chainsaw-wielding cheerleader who had to defeat zombies in order to save her boyfriend, Nick. The game was a critical and commercial success, but it's largely been forgotten in the years since its release. Let's take a look at why that is and whether or not Lollipop Chainsaw deserves to be remembered.

Game play of Lollipop Chainsaw

Lollipop Chainsaw was released to positive reviews from critics and sold over a million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling games of 2012. However, it's largely fallen off the radar in the years since its release. Part of that may be due to the fact that it was a niche title; it didn't have a mass appeal like some of the other big releases of 2012, such as Halo 4, Assassin's Creed III, or Call of Duty: Black Ops II. Additionally, 2012 was also the year that Nintendo released the Wii U, which stole a lot of attention away from other releases.

Lollipop Chainsaw was a successful title that received a mixture of reviews (mostly positive) from critics and sold over a million copies worldwide. However, it's largely been forgotten in the years since its release due to its niche appeal. While it may not be remembered by everyone these days, those who do remember it generally have fond memories of it as an enjoyable gaming experience. Lollipop Chainsaw is receiving a remake sometime in 2023 that won’t have the original game’s creative director.

Splinter Cell

For nearly two decades, the Splinter Cell video game series thrilled gamers with its stealth-action gameplay and intense storylines. But all good things must come to an end, and in 2020, Ubisoft announced that the Splinter Cell franchise had been put on indefinite hiatus. So, what happened? How did one of the most iconic video game series of all time fall by the wayside?

The first Splinter Cell game was released in 2002 to critical acclaim. Gamers loved the stealth action gameplay and the gritty, realistic storyline. The success of the first game led to sequels being released in 2004, 2006, and 2010. However, sales of the fourth game were disappointing, and Ubisoft decided to put the franchise on hold.

Gameplay of Splinter Cell

In 2012, Ubisoft released Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, a game that many fans thought was a spiritual successor to Splinter Cell. The game was well-received by critics but failed to capture the magic of the Splinter Cell franchise. As a result, Ubisoft announced that a new Splinter Cell game was in development and would be released in 2013. Unfortunately, due to production delays, the game was not released until 2015. And when it finally arrived, it was clear that something had gone wrong.

The fifth Splinter Cell game was panned by critics and gamers alike. The gameplay was clunky and boring, and the story was convoluted and uninteresting. As a result, Ubisoft once again put the franchise on hiatus. And this time, it seems like it will be permanent. While there have been rumors of a sixth Splinter Cell game in development, nothing has been officially announced by Ubisoft.

It's always sad to see a beloved video game franchise come to an end—especially one as iconic as Splinter Cell. For nearly two decades, Sam Fisher thrilled gamers with his stealthy antics and intense storylines. But unfortunately, it seems like his story has come to an end. Only time will tell if we'll ever see another Splinter Cell game—but for now, we'll just have to enjoy what we have.

Pump It Up!

Pump it Up, and Dance Dance Revolution are two of the most popular dance games on the market. They both have their fans, but which one is better? When it comes to gameplay, Pump it Up has the edge. The game features a variety of modes that provide a workout for both your body and your mind. In addition, Pump it Up is more forgiving than Dance Dance Revolution, making it a better choice for beginners. However, when it comes to music, Dance Dance Revolution has a clear advantage. The game features a wide range of songs from different genres, ensuring that there's something for everyone. In addition, the songs are well-choreographed and visually appealing.

It's safe to say that when it comes to dance games, the clear winner is Dance Dance Revolution. But what about its lesser-known competitor, Pump it Up? Despite being released only a year after DDR in 1998, Pump it Up failed to make the same impact and is now largely forgotten. So, why didn't Pump it Up succeed?

Gameplay of Pump It Up!

There are a few reasons why DDR was more successful than Pump it Up. First and foremost, DDR had much better marketing. It was heavily promoted in arcades and quickly gained a large following. In contrast, very few people even knew that Pump it Up existed.

Additionally, DDR featured catchy pop songs that appealed to a wide range of people, while Pump it Up's soundtrack consisted mostly of obscure techno and trance tracks that failed to gain mainstream appeal. Finally, DDR cabinets were significantly cheaper to manufacture than Pump it Up cabinets, which made them more attractive to arcade operators.

When it comes to dance games, there's no question that Dance Dance Revolution is the clear winner. But what about its lesser-known competitor, Pump it Up? Despite being released only a year after DDR in 1998, Pump it Up failed to make the same impact and is now largely forgotten. So, why didn't Pump it Up succeed? Poor marketing, an unappealing soundtrack, and high costs of manufacturing all contributed to its eventual downfall.

Quest 64

If you grew up in the late 1990s, there's a good chance you remember Quest 64. Released in 1996, Quest 64 was one of the first RPGs released for the Nintendo 64. Despite its underdog status, Quest 64 received critical acclaim at the time of its release and has since become a cult classic. So, what is Quest 64? And why was it so underrated? Let's take a closer look.

Quest 64 follows the story of Brian, a young boy who sets out on a quest to save his father from an evil sorcerer. Along the way, Brian must master magic spells and thwart the plans of evil monsters. While the plot may not be groundbreaking, the game's unique selling point is its real-time spellcasting system. This allows players to experiment with different combinations of spells to create devastating effects.

Game Play of Quest 64

Quest 64 was released in 1998 to mixed reviews. While it was praised for its unique gameplay, which blended elements of traditional role-playing games with action and adventure elements, it was overshadowed by other RPGs that were released around the same time, such as Final Fantasy VII and Chrono Trigger. In addition, Quest 64's anime-inspired visuals were considered dated compared to the cutting-edge graphics of its contemporaries. As a result, Quest 64 failed to find a wide audience and quickly faded into obscurity. However, thanks to its dedicated fans, the game has gained a cult following in recent years.
