NES non oem reproduction Batman Return of the Joker video game cartridge.

Batman: Return of the Joker (released in Japan as Dynamite Batman) is a side-scrolling run-and-gun platformer developed and published by Sunsoft for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in December 1991. Widely regarded as one of the most visually stunning games on the console, it serves as a follow-up to Sunsoft's 1989 Batman game.

Game Plot & Objective

The story follows Batman on a perilous journey to track down the Joker's secret hideout. Gotham City calls upon the Caped Crusader after the Joker steals several precious metals. One of these metals is highly toxic and is being used by the villain to manufacture devastating explosives for missiles.

Gameplay Mechanics

Unlike its predecessor, which heavily emphasized wall-jumping and melee combat, Return of the Joker shifts its focus toward range-based combat:

  • Weapon Upgrades: Batman is equipped with a wrist gauntlet that fires various projectiles. Players can collect power-ups to alter their weapon type, switching between standard shots, multi-directional spreads, and powerful charged blasts.
  • Health System Shifts: “for regular levels, Batman's health is represented in increments, but in the boss stages, both Batman and the boss's life meters are represented in numbers.” as noted by Wikipedia.
  • Quality of Life: While players are granted three lives, the game features a password system and unlimited continues to ease the difficulty curve.

Level & Stage Structure

The game spans seven distinct stages, most of which are divided into two sub-levels and a culminating boss arena.

  • Stage 1: Gotham City Cathedral
  • Stage 2: The Joker's Warehouse
  • Stage 3: A snowy mountain landscape
  • Stage 4: A chemical refinery
  • Stage 5: An underground conduit and sewer network
  • Stage 6: A heavily fortified military ammunition base
  • Stage 7: The Island of Ha-Hacienda

Throughout these areas, players square off against five major bosses, including the Ace Ranger, a Minedroid, the refinery's Master C.P.U., and eventually, two distinct showdowns against the Joker himself.

Technical Achievement

Sunsoft pushed the NES hardware to its absolute limits with this title. It features remarkably large character sprites, incredibly detailed background textures, and complex parallax scrolling that simulated a pseudo-3D depth rarely seen on 8-bit hardware. This aesthetic is complemented by a highly acclaimed, fast-paced driving chiptune soundtrack.
