Nintendo 64 non oem reprodction Body Harvest video game cartridge.

Body Harvest is a landmark 1998 3D action-adventure and third-person shooter video game developed by DMA Design (the studio that later became Rockstar North) and published by Midway Games in North America and Gremlin Interactive in Europe for the Nintendo 64. Notably ahead of its time, the game features a non-linear, open-world structure that allows players to freely explore, command a massive variety of vehicles, and enter buildings—concepts that heavily served as the structural blueprint for DMA Design's later paradigm-shifting title, Grand Theft Auto III.

The Story

The plot takes place in a dystopian future where humanity has been hunted to near-extinction by a brutal alien race. These extraterrestrial invaders travel via a comet and arrive once every 25 years to "harvest" organic human material. Players control Adam Drake, a genetically engineered super-soldier aboard mankind's last orbital space station. Armed with a time-travel machine, Drake must teleport back through a century of human history to thwart the alien invasions at key locations before the timeline is permanently secured by alien forcefields.

Gameplay & Structure

The gameplay is a distinct hybrid of open-world exploration, foot-based shooting, and vehicle simulation split across five massive eras:

  • Greece (1916): Set during World War I.
  • Java, Indonesia (1941): Set during World War II.
  • United States (1966): Set during the height of the mid-century.
  • Siberia, Russia (1991): Set during the end of the Cold War era.
  • Alien Comet (2016): The final futuristic showdown.

Each time period dictates the unique layout of the map, local civilian populations, and era-specific weaponry and vehicles. Players can seamlessly commandeer over 60 different vehicles, ranging from simple motorcycles, civilian cars, and fire trucks to heavy tanks, boats, and military aircraft.

The core game loop involves exploring the map, solving environmental puzzles, and rushing to stop "harvesting waves". If the giant alien processors successfully abduct and consume a set number of human civilians in a sector, they mutate into incredibly powerful boss monsters.
