Bomberman 64: Arcade Edition is the final official Nintendo 64 game released in Japan, arriving on December 20, 2001. Developed by Racjin and published by Hudson Soft, it is a 2D compilation title that is a full English translation!
Gameplay Overview
Unlike its 3D predecessors on the console, this version returns to the series' classic grid-style 2D roots. It is designed as a "culmination" of the franchise, offering a variety of gameplay styles from the previous 16 years.
Four Major Game Modes
The game features four distinct modes, each based on different spinoffs or classic entries in the series:
- Bomberman (Classic Mode): Features traditional maze-based gameplay inspired by the SNES titles.
- Single-Player: Players must defeat enemies and find exits to advance through a level grid. Rooms often have multiple exits (red or yellow), leading to branching paths.
- Multiplayer: Supports up to 4 players in a "Battle Royale" mode. Unique variants include "Tandem Battle," where one player moves the character while another places bombs.
- Panic Bomber: Based on the 1994 puzzle spinoff.
- It is a tile-matching game where players match falling colored Bomberman heads to clear their screen and attack opponents with explosions.
- SameGame: A version of the classic 1985 tile-matching puzzle game.
- Players attempt to clear large groups of adjacent, identical tiles to earn high scores before running out of moves.
- Bomberman Park: A single-player mode inspired by Bomberman Land (2000).
- Players explore a theme park and compete in various minigames to earn medals and unlock new areas.
