Dragon Ball Z Attack of the Saiyans is a 2009 turn-based role-playing game (RPG) developed by Monolith Soft and published by Namco Bandai for the Nintendo DS. It is highly regarded by fans for its faithful adaptation of the source material and its engaging strategic combat. 

Story & Setting

The game covers the events of the late Dragon Ball era through the conclusion of the Saiyan Saga. 

• Timeline: It begins with the Z Fighters training for the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament (Piccolo Jr. Saga) and ends with the definitive battle against Vegeta.
• New Content: To expand the RPG experience, the game includes original side-stories and "filler" content not seen in the anime or manga, such as backstory for characters like Tien, Yamcha, and Krillin during their training periods.
• Playable Roster: Players can control six iconic heroes: Goku, Kid Gohan, Piccolo, Krillin, Yamcha, and Tien. 

Gameplay Mechanics

The game features traditional RPG elements combined with series-specific mechanics. 

• Turn-Based Combat: Players manage a three-character party. Battles use a round-based system where characters earn Ability Points (AP) to unlock and upgrade special techniques like the Kamehameha.
• Active Guard: A timing-based defense mechanic that allows players to press a button just before an enemy strike to significantly reduce damage.
• Rage Gauge & Sparking Combos: As characters deal and take damage, a "Rage Gage" fills. When full, they can perform Ultimate Attacks. If multiple characters have full gauges, they can execute Sparking Combos (powerful tag-team attacks).
• Exploration: Players navigate a world map and area-specific maps (forests, caves, towns), using Ki Blasts to destroy obstacles and find hidden treasures.
• Side Quests & Secrets: Includes a "Pokemon-style" quest where players use Tien's Evil Containment Wave to capture enemies, and a secret encounter with the legendary Broly.
