Gunstar Super Heroes is the 2005 sequel to the legendary Sega Genesis run-and-gun classic, developed by Treasure and published by Sega. It is widely considered one of the most technically impressive games on the Game Boy Advance, pushing the handheld's hardware with massive screen-filling bosses, intense explosion effects, and pseudo-3D scaling.
Core Gameplay Features
The game retains the fast-paced action of its predecessor but introduces several significant changes to the mechanics:
- Refined Combat: Unlike the original, characters can move and shoot in eight different directions simultaneously using the R-button for fixed aiming.
- Weapon System: The ability to combine weapons is absent. Instead, players can switch on the fly between three primary weapon types: Rapid Fire, Chaser (Homing), and Explosive.
- Supercharge Meter: A new super meter fills as you damage enemies, allowing you to unleash a devastating special attack once full.
- Melee & Acrobatics: Players can perform advanced melee strikes, slides, and air attacks using the A and B buttons in combination with the D-pad.
Story and Characters
The plot takes place a century after the destruction of the "God of Ruin" (Golden Silver). When a mechanical fifth moon appears, a new Empire attempts to resurrect the ancient threat.
- Protagonists: You play as Red or Blue, elite warriors of the organization "3YE" (The Third Eye). Notably, this version of Red is female, unlike the original male character.
- Branching Narrative: The story and dialogue change based on the chosen character and difficulty setting, with higher difficulties revealing a darker, more complex narrative.
Level Variety
Across its six core levels, the game constantly shifts genres and perspectives:
- Classic Run-and-Gun: Traditional side-scrolling platforming and shooting.
- Vehicle Stages: Including aircraft dogfights and bird's-eye view helicopter missions.
- Unique Gimmicks: One notable stage (Moon 4) functions like a combat-based board game where players roll dice to progress through different challenges.
