Released in May 2001, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages is a top-down action-adventure game for the Game Boy Color that emphasizes intricate puzzle-solving. Developed by Capcom’s Flagship team and published by Nintendo, it was released simultaneously with its counterpart, Oracle of Seasons.
Plot & Setting
The game takes place in the land of Labrynna. The Triforce summons Link to this realm, where he witnesses the evil sorceress Veran possess Nayru, the Oracle of Ages. Veran travels 400 years into the past to alter history and build a "Tower of Darkness". Guided by the Maku Tree, Link must collect the eight Essences of Time to restore the flow of time and defeat Veran.
Core Gameplay Features
- Time Travel: Using the Harp of Ages, Link can shift between the past and present. Actions taken in the past, such as planting a seed or moving a stone, directly affect the landscape of the present.
- Puzzle Focus: While its sibling Seasons focuses on combat, Ages is renowned for its "head-scratching" puzzles and complex dungeons like Jabu-Jabu’s Belly.
- Magic Rings: Players can collect 64 unique rings that grant bonuses, such as increased defense or special abilities.
- Animal Companions: Link can befriend one of three partners—Moosh the winged bear, Ricky the kangaroo, or Dimitri the dodongo—to help navigate specific terrain.
The Linking System
By completing the game, you receive a password to use in Oracle of Seasons (and vice versa). This "Linked Game" unlocks:
- New story elements and extended endings.
- The ability to carry over items and upgrades.
- Exclusive boss battles against Twinrova and Ganon.
