Mother 1 is a full English translation, while Mother 2 is a partial English translation.

Mother 1 + 2 is a compilation for the Game Boy Advance (GBA) that includes the first two installments of the Mother series: Mother (known internationally as EarthBound Beginnings) and Mother 2 (known as EarthBound). Originally released only in Japan on June 20, 2003, it brought these classic role-playing games to a portable format with several technical and gameplay adjustments. 

Core Gameplay and Story

Both games are turn-based RPGs set in a satirical, modern-day version of the United States (Eagleland). 

• Mother 1: Follows a boy named Ninten who uses psychic powers (PSI) to investigate paranormal phenomena and collect eight melodies to stop an alien invasion.
• Mother 2: Features Ness and his friends as they travel across the world to gather another set of eight melodies to defeat the cosmic destroyer, Giygas. 

Key Differences in the GBA Version

While mostly direct ports, the GBA hardware necessitated several changes from the original Famicom and Super Famicom versions:

• Visual Adjustments: The screen resolution is lower, so the view is often zoomed in or cropped. The graphics are also noticeably brighter to compensate for the original GBA's lack of a backlight.
• Audio Quality: Music and sound effects suffer from significant compression, leading many fans to consider the audio quality inferior to the console originals.
• Gameplay Improvements:
• The "Easy Ring" was added to the Mother 1 portion, which reduces encounter rates and increases experience gain to mitigate the original's heavy grinding.
• The map is now accessible at any time by pressing START, freeing up an inventory slot.
• Running is enabled by holding the B button in Mother 1.
• Plot Tweaks: Mother 1 includes certain changes to items and event triggers to match the previously unreleased English prototype (EarthBound Beginnings).
