Nintendo 64 non oem reproduction Perfect Dark video game cartridge.
Perfect Dark is a landmark 2000 first-person shooter (FPS) developed by Rare for the Nintendo 64. It is widely regarded as the "spiritual successor" to Goldeneye 007, as it was built on an upgraded version of the same engine and shared many of its core gameplay mechanics.
Core Gameplay & Features
- Protagonist & Plot: Players take on the role of Joanna Dark, an elite agent for the Carrington Institute. The story is set in 2023 and involves uncovering an extraterrestrial conspiracy involving the rival corporation dataDyne.
- Mission Structure: The single-player campaign consists of levels grouped into missions. Players must complete specific objectives that vary in number and complexity based on the chosen difficulty setting (Agent, Special Agent, or Perfect Agent).
- Innovative Weaponry: Every weapon in the game features a secondary fire mode, adding significant strategic depth. Examples include the Laptop Gun, which can be deployed as a sentry turret, and the Farsight XR-20, a sniper rifle that can see and shoot through walls.
- Technical Ambition: One of the most advanced titles for the N64, it requires the Expansion Pak to access the full campaign and most multiplayer features. It supported high-resolution graphics, widescreen (16:9), and Dolby Surround Sound—rarities for the console at the time.
Multiplayer Modes
Perfect Dark is particularly famous for its robust Combat Simulator:
- Simulants (Bots): Up to eight computer-controlled "Simulants" with distinct personalities (e.g., VengeSims hunt the last player who killed them) can be added to matches.
- Co-operative & Counter-Operative: The campaign can be played with a partner in co-op. In Counter-Operative mode, a second player takes control of various enemies in the level to try and stop Joanna from completing her objectives.
