Nintendo 64 non oem, Resident Evil 2 video game cartridge.

Resident Evil 2 for the Nintendo 64 is widely considered a "technical marvel" for compressing a two-disc Playstation game (roughly 1.2GB) into a signle 64MB cartridge. Developed by Angel Studios (now Rockstar San Diego), this port managed to include all original cinematic cutscenes while adding exclusive features not found in other versions.

Key Technical Achievements

  • Massive Compression: The team used aggressive and creative compression techniques to fit high-quality FMV (Full-Motion Video) and audio onto a cartridge 19 times smaller than the original CD-ROM storage.
  • Visual Enhancements:
    • Higher Resolution: Supports the N64 Expansion Pak for an increased resolution of up to 640x480 during gameplay.
    • Smoother Graphics: Features improved character animations and sharper, perspective-corrected 3D textures compared to the PS1 version.
  • Audio: This is the only version to feature Dolby Surround sound, with a soundtrack re-worked from scratch to provide higher sample rates for instruments.

Exclusive N64 Features

  • Item Randomizer: A unique mode that reshuffles the location of items, keys, and enemies for every new playthrough, significantly increasing replay value.
  • Ex Files: 16 new in-game documents that reveal deeper lore and connect the story to future installments like Resident Evil 3, Code: Veronica, and Resident Evil Zero.
  • First-Person Controls: Adds an alternate control scheme (often called "3D controls") that allows for character-relative movement instead of traditional "tank controls".
  • Customizable Violence: Includes a violence control meter to adjust the level of gore and the ability to change blood color (e.g., to green or blue).
  • Alternate Costumes: Features new hidden costumes for Leon and Claire not found in the original release.

Compromises & Limitations

  • Compressed FMVs: To fit on the cartridge, cutscenes appear pixelated and have a lower bitrate compared to the PlayStation version.
  • Audio Quality: While the music is high-quality, voice acting and some sound effects in FMVs can sound "tinny" due to high compression.
  • Missing Content: Does not include the "Extreme Battle" minigame found in the Dual Shock Ver. or later ports.
