SpongeBob SquarePants and the Battle for Bikini Bottom is a 2D side-scrolling platformer developed by Vicarious Visions. Released in October 2003, it differs significantly from the 3D console versions, focusing on linear level-based progression and puzzle-solving. 

Gameplay and Features

• Playable Characters: Unlike the console versions that feature Patrick and Sandy, SpongeBob is the only playable character in this handheld entry.
• Combat Mechanics: Combat is centered on using bubbles to stun or "switch" robots off and on rather than destroying them permanently.
• Special Abilities: SpongeBob can perform moves like the Bubble Spin, Bubble Bash (Viking helmet launch), and Bubble Bounce. He can also ride Mystery the Seahorse in certain levels to solve puzzles.
• Level Structure: The game consists of four chapters, each containing six or seven regular levels and a boss level.
• Collectibles:
• Golden Spatulas: Three per level are required to unlock new areas.
• Krabby Patties: Collecting all 20 in a level unlocks bonus levels where players can earn extra lives or photos.
• Save System: Uses a password system rather than battery-backed saves. 

Plot

The story follows Plankton's attempt to take over the world with his Duplicatotron 3000. However, he forgets to set the robots to "Obey," leading to a mechanical uprising that trashes Bikini Bottom. Mr. Krabs hires SpongeBob to fight the robots and reach the Chum Bucket to shut down the machine.
